A Centrifuge is a motor-driven laboratory instrument that spins samples at high speed, using centrifugal force to separate components of different densities within a fluid. In a blood bank, the primary purpose of a centrifuge is to separate whole blood into its main components: red blood cells, platelet-rich plasma, and platelet-poor plasma.
The machine contains a rotor that holds the blood bags or tubes. When the rotor spins, the heavier cells are forced to the bottom, allowing for the extraction of lighter plasma from the top.
